Dave Ackley is the founder of Ackley Associates, a consulting firm that has specialized in advanced modeling methods. He has over 40 years' experience in business and systems analysis, method development and process improvement. He holds a BS in electrical engineering, an MBA, and a PhD in business administration.
.
Early Enterprise Modeling: Dr. Ackley's involvement in enterprise modeling began in 1978, with development of a top-down "functional business modeling" method to plan information systems and database projects at Lockheed Missiles & Space Company. Since that time he has consulted with over 50 major corporations on enterprise modeling, information systems planning and process reengineering.
.
Process-Object-State Method: In 1987 he developed a more complete enterprise modeling method called Process-Object-State (POS). This research and development effort included participation by Pacific Bell and Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC). The method was highly efficient for detailed business modeling, but like most existing methods was time consuming for enterprise-level modeling.
.
Business Enterprise Model: Recognizing the pressure on businesses to respond ever more quickly to market and technology changes, Dr. Ackley began a search in 1995 for a way to drastically reduce enterprise model development time. This led to his breakthrough discovery of a single generic architectural structure that is common to every business enterprise. The result was an entirely new template-based Integrated Modeling Method that reduced enterprise model development time and cost by over 95%.
.
City Model: In 1997, he was asked to develop a model of a city and its government. It soon became clear that the business enterprise modeling method was inadequate for the job. Although a city has some business enterprise characteristics, it is a very different kind of entity whose modeling would require a much broader scope with a completely different perspective. This turned out to be a daunting task that would require much research at a later time. Little did he know then that development of this model would require viewing a city as part of an organic living system.
.
Living Systems Model: In 2002, Dr. Ackley began a full-time R&D effort to understand the system structure of living entities. After several years of research and trial versions, he has finally developed the robust conceptual framework necessary to model a city, its organizations, citizens, and governing structure. By viewing a city as a regional part of a nation-state superorganism, the innate characteristics of its subsystems and functions can be fully understood and explained.
